End Plastic Straw Use

Our Goal is Less Plastic Use.

We’re Starting With Plastic Straws, Cups and Stir Sticks.

Sorry Charlie’s Oyster Bar is joining the charge in ending the use of non-compostable plastics. We first began taking steps by using more environmentally-friendly to-go materials. Being that we are located in a coastal city where storm drains flow directly to the Savannah River, then continues into the coastal estuaries, and finally to the Atlantic Ocean, we think this effort is especially important.

A 2015 study published in the journal Science showed that in 2010 alone a total of 8 million metric tons of plastic entered the world’s oceans. 8 million metric tons of plastic is equal to five grocery-sized bags filled with plastic for every foot of coastline in the world.

We understand that straws are just the tip of the landfill when it comes to plastic waste. When it comes to all of the single use plastic we encounter daily, it may seem as though a drinking straw is the least of our worries. But here at Sorry Charlie’s, we believe you have to start somewhere.

A Good Start

For the last few months, Sorry Charlie’s has been phasing out its remaining inventory of single use plastics such as plastic straws and “to-go” cups. Our traditional plastic cups are being replaced with a corn-based plastic cup that is biodegradable and compostable. Plastic straws are being replaced with paper straws, and all styrofoam containers have been replaced with paper-based containers. We are also in the process of replacing plastic stir sticks.

In a city renowned for its “to-go cup” policy, proximity to the ocean, and booming food and beverage based tourism industry, we believe addressing our single-use plastics is a good start. Therefore, our goal is to significantly reduce the use of single-use plastics in Sorry Charlie’s by September 1, 2018.
